Hey Todd
I am a highschool teacher in Canada. I work with a bunch of really great
teachers. Unfortunately, I had a tough day this past Friday. I was sitting
in the staff room just veging before my next class when I got in the middle
of a strange conversation. One of the new teachers (he's 24 and insists he
must drive a BMW!!) was talking about why he would not attend the student
run and organized Variety Show. Needless to say once he shared I sat there
looking at him with my mouth gaping open for several minutes.
Here is the conversation from where I came in:
Him: "That is just my belief system. I can't attend something that is called
Cursed"
Another male teacher having a hard time dealing with his decision: "well,
you got to do what feels right for you"
Him: "Well, just like I couldn't attend a Halloween dance, or a school
function where a GAY PARENT IS PRESENT...............(he continued, but I
was unable to listen to any more of his examples which furthered his
ignorance"
This is where my mouth gaped open. I will admit that he is allowed to do and
believe what he wants based on his religious beliefs, but....Our school is
populated with openly gay students, and gay teachers..Gay people are all
around!! I mean we live in Montreal!!
I was shocked to say the least. It all started to make sense as to why some
students say that he is a monster, with having favourites and ignoring
students or lowering some students grades.
As I was sitting there another guy (non-teacher) comes storming in to the
staff room (I will say this guy annoys me and creeps me out) shouting how
unbelievable it is that a 14 year old girl accused him of staring at her
chest. I later had the student come to me and tell me the story..I believe
her. This is not the first time allegations of inappropriate behaviour have
occurred with him....
Anyway, my rant is going on in a personal nature..but, my real beef is: What
is wrong with people!!?? How the heck can you work with children if you are
like this. Are we not supposed to be leading by example? I worry now about
the students. I mean the guy making the gay comment is black. You would
think he would know a little something about unfounded
discrimination...apparently not!!
To the world in general...We CAN do Better!!
Thanks, I still don't feel better about these two guys, but it inspires me
to do better and hope the students follow my example and not theirs
