Hi Todd!

I just wanted to say I've been to the Berkley Pit! I saw it last
summer during a geology field camp. It gets its red color from the
soluble iron oxidizing. When you visit there, you go out onto this
deck over looking the pit and its amazingly huge. Then you hit some
button and it tells you the history of the place. It was mildly
interesting, so I don't remember much of what it said. I'm sending you
some pictures I took while on the trip (it was Evil Knivel Days when I
was there, so that was exciting. Some guy jumped out of a hot air balloon and landed on a giant inflatable pad.

No picture of that though). If you look into the background of one of
the pit pics you'll see a white waterfall. The waterfall is actually a
calcium carbonate solution that neutralizes the acid in the pit. Other
pictures I've sent are the mining activities that produced the pit. Enjoy!!
