MONDAY'S POET

by Jen V.V.

fourth of july

a different muse rules this month.
we are
different now –
we are splendid and older giddy and brighter
new constellations testing the skies.

and things have happened.

and things will
will and
will
still happen.

but for today i’m silverdarting silvergleaming around town
beckoning the yes
wearing new shoes every day and riding trains
that glide across water. it’s july now and i’m swirling deep in the heat,
taking you out for lunchtime cartwheels,
stealing sparkles to make it all special.

and i’m waiting for the fireworks the phosphorent ooh and aah –

spiders in the sky, tendrils descending, gunpowder arabesques:
try to catch a spark; hold it close to your heart
and think of me and small explosions –

augustborn, i’m ruled by leo, firesign – fire to court, fire to mourn,
fire to dance to as music, fire as velocity, fire to love me by
and leave me by

and to all this i’m saying yes and yes

wanting to shrink the whole city into a diamond to wear on my finger,
jewel of scars, hardened singular flame
casting brightness upward and upward.

so put your yesterdays in a blender; add pomengranate and honey; add tequila; add ice. blend well and pour into a tall glass rimmed with sugar. drink toast after toast with me
until nothing ancient makes you parched – until your oldest mistakes are melting
soft and forgiven
on my bed of firesigns

so put your yesterdays in a blender; add pomengranate and honey; add tequila; add ice. blend well and pour into a tall glass rimmed with sugar. drink toast after toast with me

until nothing ancient makes you parched – until your oldest mistakes are melting

soft and forgiven

on my bed of firesigns
