Hey Todd!
Before my gran (we called her Ra-ree) died, my sisters and I collected her recipes and got oral histories from her on each one. Being with her in the kitchen while she cooked was like sitting at the knee of the world's best story teller. Every recipe evoked a wonderful memory forher. So, we collected them and put them in a binder to give to my mom forMother's Day the year after Ra-ree died. This is her BBQ sauce recipe.
Take care, Deirdre

Peggy’s Kitchen Sink Barbecue Sauce
Makes 2 ½ cups
2 tbsp olive oil
1 medium onion, chopped
1 clove garlic, minced
1 14oz bottle of catsup (Heinz will do)
¼ cup Worcestershire sauce
¼ cup soy sauce
¼ cup beer (light - NOT Guinness)
2 tbsp maple syrup
2 tbsp cider vinegar
½ tsp dry mustard (Coleman’s is best)
¼ tsp salt
¼ tsp cayenne pepper
¼ tsp tabasco sauce
In a saucepan, saute onion and garlic in oil till limp. Add all remaining
ingredients. Stir, bring to a boil & simmer 15 minutes. Remove from heat.
This sauce improves with age. Keep in fridge.
Ra-ree says:
“It was a rite of passage, learning how to cook barbecue. See, in
Ireland, there is no such thing as barbecue. Outdoor cooking was only for
tinkers and the unfortunates. So, to come to America and learn that barbecue
was a summer past time second only to baseball was quite a shock…. “

Cheap Ramen-Spaghetti
From Las Vegas, NV
All right, I know it sounds gross. Since my family
has bequeathed upon me tons of useless ramen, I figure I had better eat it
than waste it. Plus, I don't have room to store uneaten things. So I made
this recipe to help the experience of eating ramen go a bit better.
1 package of (shudder) Ramen Noodles
1 can of Traditional Spaghetti Sauce (no need for name brands here)
1 green bell pepper (chop it)
1 red bell pepper (chop it)
Black Olives (chop them)
Bag of frozen (or fresh) Snow Peas
Shredded cheese- Colby
Cook the ramen- don't add any type of wierd packet
flavoring or whatnot. This is not the time for icky powdered madness. Wait
about 2 mins, you want the Ramen halfway done- drain it. In the same pot as
the ramen. dump a good amount of spaghetti sauce, both chopped peppers,
olives and snowpeas. Let it simmer in it's juices for another 2 mins or
until the Ramen noodles look plump enough. Now you have a decision to make-
my husband will not eat this concoction without cheese amply spread on top.
I don't like it this way, but he insists. Decide for yourself. If you are
going the no-cheese route, tap some parmasan cheese on top like normal
spaghetti.
If this isn't muy bueno to you, leave it out on the
porch- birds will eat it willingly.

EZ BBQ
You need: About 1/2 pound of sliced deli
ham...sliced very thin
One small jar of spaghetti sauce ( I like Ragu traditional)
Tiny bit of olive oil or butter (depending on how much cholesterol you can
consume)
Favorite bread rolls (hamburger, Kaiser, hoagie, etc.)
Put butter or oil in pan and heat at medium high....put in ham....swirl it around the pan so it gets nice and warm
Pour in the sauce...enough to cover the ham (or more if you like your BBQs drippy)
Let simmer for.....about 3 minutes...until the sauce is hot.
Spread over favorite rolls.
I like it because it's good...it's easy...it's fast...and you only have to wash one pan...especially if you use paper plates.
I'm from Pennsylvania. Susan
