This isn't so much a recipe as
it is two really simple recipes that taste good together. It
still makes for a killer and really cheap lunch at work, or while you're out
looking for work. Assuming you already have the Tupperware container
and plastic fork, the whole she-bang will run you about $5, and you'll have
leftover parts for next time, too. Do note that this is a lunch that
makes people ask, "What are you eating?", so if you don't like
explaining your food choices to people, save this for when you're eating
alone. My friend said it looked like something only Broadway the fat
gargoyle would eat, so since then, we've called it:
BROADWAY'S CHEAPY CHEAPY LUNCH
1 pkg of Hot-n-Spicy peanuts
(preferably the long plastic "tube" from a convenience store)
1 pkg of sunflower nuts (NOT
seeds. Nuts. Also, preferably in the "tube")
1 small take-out container of
steamed rice
1/4 - 1/2 pkg of frozen peas
1 small Tupperware container
1 plastic fork
In the morning, cook the peas in
your microwave, following the instructions on the package. Drain the
peas (trust me - you want to do this step), then put them in a small
Tupperware type container. Take the peas and the two packages of nuts
to work, or just along in your bag while you're out looking for work.
When it's about lunch time, go
to the Chinese restaurant nearest you and order a small container of steamed
rice. They always offer this, but no one ever orders it. Then
head back to work, or find a nice place to eat.
Put all the stuff on your table or
around your area, in that "I'm about to eat" sort of way.
Open the rice container, and open the spicy peanuts. Sprinkle a few on
top of the rice, then eat them with the fork. Add more, and eat more.
You'll have to work to get the proper rice-peanut ratio for you -
some like lots of peanuts with a little rice, and others prefer mostly rice
with just a few peanuts. Don't worry if you don't like
"spicy" foods, because (a) it's Planters-hot, which isn't that hot
at all, and (b) the steamed rice takes the edge off. I don't like
spicy foods at all, and I love this stuff.
Now open the Tupperware
container of peas, and open the sunflower nuts. Sprinkle some
nuts onto the peas. Stir em up if you want, and eat. Some folks
like to add a bit of extra salt - if it's around, feel free. Keep
switching between the peanut combo and the peas-nut combo until you're
full, which should be long before either the peanuts or the sunflower
nuts run out. Then close up the remaining peanuts and sunflower nuts
(you might need scotch tape for that), and save them for your NEXT round of
Broadway's Cheapy Cheapy Lunch.
Make sure you take home your
Tupperware container, though.
