Boot to your recovery cd, you made one right, boot to safe mode or last known good configuration. If not restore from your monthly full backup or weekly incremental to a new hard drive. You do backups don’t you?
Question is what were you working on? If it was general browsing the Internet, then I wouldn’t worry. How old is your hard drive. I would suggest replace it after 3 years. Recommended software – Disk Keeper Professional from Condusiv Technologies.

It’s a user-triggered fault. Could be a driver that was updated automatically that was corrupted or it could be something more malicious. Start up in safe mode, install a reliable anti-virus tool and scan it. Also scan the registry and it should be fixed. Sorry to hear of your troubles, tOdd.
Boot to safe mode, then load last known good config, scan, save your files. Then just reload the OS, bite the bullet and do it.
You know what IS creepy? That they’re STILL using Windows XP. Switch to Windows 7 or 8.
