MONDAY'S POET

Waiting On Rumors

Another round of layoffs

Another pile of pink slips

Oh please God, not me

I still have a car to pay off

And last year’s Florida trip

Oh please God, not me

I come in everyday on time

I’m usually here working late

I work hard, can’t you see?

I believe in the company line

Last week I even missed a date

With my wife and my family

Waiting on rumors to subside

Hoping the rumors will just die

Why do they like to fan the lies?

Fueling the uncertainty in our lives

I thought we were doing great

Beating all our competitors

That’s what the newsletter said

Turns out we were always late

We were really no better

I guess we were all misled

Thought we were

Kickin’ ass on the IPO

I guess it shows how much I know

Didn’t realize the stock was low

That’s why I’m an average Joe

And don’t live like the CEO

Waiting on rumors to subside

Hoping the rumors will just die

Why do they like to fan the lies?

Fueling the uncertainty in our lives

“The President talks of downturn”

All this talk makes my stomach churn

“The Fed cut interest rates again”

Wish my wallet wasn’t so thin

“Watch out, the jobless rate may rise”

I wish I could ignore the lies

Why are they messing with my life

Causing all this needless strife

Everyone talks but no one knows

What’s for certain, what really goes

How long are they going to take?

Don’t they know our jobs are at stake?

Waiting on rumors to subside

Hoping the rumors will just die

Why do they like to fan the lies?

Fueling the uncertainty in our lives

Read about it in the morning paper

Even before I ate my toast

There it was on page B-4

It was the news I was waiting for

Our company just laid off the most

But still I got dressed and ready

I had to drive to work and see

If one of those thousands was me

And end all this uncertainty

Got to work and parked my car

It turns out I didn’t get too far

I was locked out of my computer

And was met by my manager

Who told me I was a casualty

Of our poor business policies

Now know the rumors weren’t just lies

They don’t care about our lives

No one here to sympathize

Just victims of the bottom line
